Wal-Mart Doesn’t Compete with Eckerd?

Earlier this week I was at Eckerd fulling a prescription. When submitting the script, I asked for and received the Wal-Mart generic drug price of $4.
Today when I was there fulfilling another prescription, I again asked for the Wal-Mart generic price-match. However, the pharmacist — the same one working last time as luck would have it — told me that she received an email from the Eckerd Corporate Office on this topic. She said that the email says that Eckerd doesn’t compete with Wal-Mart, because Eckerd is a local pharmacy, while Wal-Mart is a national discount chain, and they are thus not competitors.
She went on to say that she disagreed with the corporate office’s assessment, and agreed that there’s no product category in the entire Eckerd store that Wal-Mart doesn’t also sell, but that would be the new policy after today.
I will follow up with the Eckerd Corporate Office next week to see what they have to say on the topic, but it seems inconceivable to me that they would actually say that they don’t compete with Wal-Mart, however, this article from MSNBC indicates the CVS (which owns Eckerd) will not match the price.
