When buying a mattress, its hard to compare brands and
styles. However, unless you are the princess and the pea,
you
probably can’t tell the difference between the $7,000 mattress and the
$70 version. Here’s a great
article from Slate Magazine on how the mattress industry works and what
to look for in a mattress and why. Here’s what you really
need to know:

Mattresses are basically a commodity. Buy the least expensive
one that suits you.
All mattresses use springs from the same manufacturer
Most (all) of the differentiation of different (pillow) tops and
bottoms is largely irrelevant
The differing versions of mattress sold by the same manufacturer in
different stores is done to make it hard for you to compare prices

The article also has a good explanation of the Jarjon in the mattress
industryr and an explanation of how much (if at all) you
should value it.
